Welcome to SOS

Welcome to Southampton Operatic Society (SOS), an award-winning group of about 100 amateur performers of all ages. Established in 1924, we are the longest established dramatic society in the area but we are also a forward-looking group with a vibrant social scene and a large Junior Section (Debut Youth Theatre).

We perform a wide variety of shows from grand opera right through to Gilbert & Sullivan and modern musicals. We also have a concert group which is available to provide high quality, entertaining concert performances. We support a number of local and national charities. Acting membership is open to anyone who passes an audition but we are always looking for non-acting members to assist with our all-important offstage activities. For more information, please follow one of the links above.

    Features

    Orpheus in the Underworld

    Southampton Operatic Society proudly presents an entirely original adaptation of Offenbach's outrageous operetta Orpheus in the Underworld.

    The retelling of this Ancient Greek myth takes us to the heights of Mount Olympus and the depths of Hades as Orpheus reluctantly seeks to save his wife, Eurydice, from the clutches of Pluto – the God of the Underworld. Hedonistic deities toy with vulnerable mortals in this bawdy romp - all brought to life through Offenbach’s memorable music (including the Can-Can!).

    Prepare for an evening of gods, goddesses, jealousy, japery, love, lust, singing and sheep. Early ticket booking is highly recommended. It will be one hell of a show!

    A Night at the Opera!

    Southampton Operatic Society returns to Hanger Farm with two contrasting one act comic operas – Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Sullivan’s Cox & Box..

    What do you do when your deceased relative has died and left his substantial wealth to a charity? According to Gianni Schicchi you pretend that you are him and write a new will – what could possibly go wrong? Based on an actual incident, the opera features the aria “O mio babbino caro” (Oh, my dear papa).

    Sullivan collaborated with F.C. Burnand to create Cox and Box and it was his first successful comic opera - a humorous take on flat sharing Victorian style. If one tenant works all day and the other all night then why not collect double the rent? After all, they are never going to meet each other, are they?

    In Memory of Colin Sly

    Southampton Operatic Society held a Memorial Concert for Society stalwart Colin Sly at The Turner Sims on February 19th 2011.

    To remember Colin we have also created the SOS Hall of Fame in which we celebrate Colin's huge contribution to the Society over many years.

    SOS Concert Group

    Southampton Operatic Society has a Concert Group which is available to provide high quality, entertaining concert performances. Over recent years it has performed for many local venues and charities, including Save the Children, Lions Clubs and Rotary clubs and can provide a wide-ranging choice of musical styles and repertoires, whether you are looking for a general theme or a more bespoke offering to fit a particular occasion.

    Recent concert menus have included:

    • Songs From the Shows;
    • Valentines’ Evening;
    • Songs From the Wars;
    • Heroes and Villains;
    • James Bond Night;
    • Last Night of the Proms; and
    • Italian Music Night

    Our concert group performers include many of the very best voices in the Society’s membership and can bring you an evening of comedy, high drama or operatic fireworks, as you require, and all at very reasonable rates. We typically field between 8 and 25 singers according to the occasion and venue.

    Although our performers are all willing volunteers only too happy to help the Society’s charitable fundraising, we do have to cover the cost of rehearsal venues, accompanists and music. We will therefore suggest a suitable donation to reflect the amount of work and rehearsal necessary to meet your requirements. We will discuss this cost with you when you make your inquiry and in appropriate cases may come to see you at your venue, go through a possible programme with you or even design an à la carte menu with you, in which case we are likely to ask you for small booking deposit.

    Over recent years the Society has helped charities raise over £28,000, mainly through providing a song and supper show. So if you are looking to have an entertaining evening of song and laughter for your own amusement or to raise funds for your charity or even if you just need some singers for a special event, we have the team for you!
